Coffee at Starbucks, then hit up for a handout.?
I'm at Starbucks, reading and enjoying my coffee when a guy comes up asking for money. He's laid off from his job, lost his place to live, has been living out of his car with his wife and baby. The shelter won't take him in until tomorrow, so he's asking for money for a hotel room. The car has no heater, etc. I start with the questions. Where is your car? He points out the window. Is that your wife in the car? Yes. What kind of work did you do? Sheet metal. You have an accent, where are you from? Jersey. All the questions are answered without hesitation. His body language does not betray a lie. Hmm... I reach into my pocket. I have two bills, a $10 and $20. I give him the ten. He proceeds to work the rest of room. He hits up one guy I know to be a self made millionaire who owns his own business. This guy gives him a $100. The beggar leaves, then I askr: What if it was a ripoff? He says, "That would be between that guy and God" What would you do?

- I don't have much money myself, so I never give cash. If I really feel there is a need, I give things when I have them. If someone tells me they need money for food, I am much more likely to give them something to eat. I also try to keep a spare hat or sweater in my vehicle for the people by the side of the road if they don't have one. I heard a sermon once that said people pay for what they want more of in their lives. If we want more beggars, then pay the beggars. I thought it sounded rather cold, because sometimes people can't help their circumstances. Then again, some can.
- I would say the same as the self made millionaire. For it is upon his shoulders, If he made a difference in his life then his duty was served. It it was a rip off then he shall answer his maker. Wise millionaire, ; )
- You are so very generous and, I think, you will be rewarded at some point in life. Whether or not it was a ripoff, you gave to him out of the goodness of your heart, in hopes of helping him and his family. Bless you.
- First I wouldn't be at Starbucks paying five bucks for a fifty cent cup of coffee...That's just dumb...
